What’s the hurry and what do we really need? How different could the world be if we all just took what we “really” need? These are questions I ask myself when, in my opinion, I see wealth and resources unevenly distributed and the playing field tilted to a degree that is unfair to many.
We all have opinions, as well we should, and I think it’s good to express them in a respectful manner. Who knows, maybe something good comes of it.
However, there are some who can’t help themselves. They have a difficult time expressing their opinion without insulting, degrading, criticizing (insert your own words) others who don’t agree with them. This is what I call “lowering the bar”. I see it as the bar of civility or decency, but you can come up with your own term. I see it everywhere, from social media, talk shows, news, face to face conversations, etc. When did it become necessary to forego human decency to express an opinion? It’s troubling to me…..
lyrics
Take your time, slow down some; take it easy, you don’t have to run
There’s enough here for everyone, if everybody shared
What if we all agreed, to only take what we need
If there was no heartless greed and everybody cared?
I’m not tryin’ to change your mind, I’m just sayin’ what’s on mine
Opinions aren’t a crime, tho some act like they are
Regardless of your point of view, when the day is through
When we all do what we got to do, please, just-don’t-lower-the bar!
It might sound implausible, a little crazy or impossible,
Probably improbable, but that won’t stop a dream
We may never reach a deal, or come close to the ideal
But I can’t un-feel what I feel, or deny what I believe
I’m not tryin’ to change your mind, I’m just sayin’ what’s on mine
Opinions aren’t a crime, tho some act like they are
Regardless of your point of view, when the day is through
When we all do what we got to do, please, just-don’t- lower- the-bar!
